Next 'micro-local' Web site: FarmingtonSentinel.com
A few months back we launched a very-local Web site called ChinaSentinel.com. You can access it directly or from a prominent link on our home pages www.onlinesentinel.com and www.kjonline.com.
The idea was to provide that single community with all kinds of news, directories, contact and other information.
We promised at the time that more "micro-local" Web sites like ChinaSentinel.com would be forthcoming. This weekend, we make good on that promise.
On Sunday, we will launch FarmingtonSentinel.com. This site will be chock full of Farmington news, lists, resources, events, photos — and, eventually, reader chat areas and forums.
Why Farmington? Well, the idea when we started this "Small Towns" project last year was that we would develop sites that serve towns removed from our two, core cities: Waterville and Augusta (one could argue Skowhegan is a core town for us, too).
We also looked for towns with distinct advertising bases, in all candor (although another town in the planning stage for a site doesn't quite fit that description). ChinaSentinel.com was launched — and it's been a success, in terms of both reader interest and advertising — because it fit those categories.
Farmington does too.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in Farmington, where the Morning Sentinel and Sun-Journal of Lewiston have long-standing, strong presences as daily newspapers. There's a strong weekly in Franklin County too, and a local news Web site.
But our site will be different. FarmingtonSentinel.com will be the only news and information provider dedicated to Farmington and Farmington alone.
Start reading the site on Sunday and feel free to let us know what you think about it. We're excited about this launch. There are more to come.
