I was wrong: It's Obama vs.McCain
So much for one of my rare stabs at making political predictions.
A few months ago, after Barack Obama had a particularly strong week and had seized momentum, I wrote in this blog that Hillary Clinton still would win the nomination. I said the Clintons were more shrewd and perhaps more ruthlessly ambitious than Obama.
It sure looks like I was wrong -- though I can't shake the feeling that something else is happening.
Assuming I was wrong, it's certainly an interesting matchup, Obama vs. McCain.
A young and different, arguably inexperienced, candidate against an old (by historical standards), very experienced candidate.
One candidate is historic: Obama's the first black nominee from a major party.
One candidate is heroic: There's no denying McCain's valor during the Vietnam War or his devotion to the US Senate.
Bring on the general election, I guess. But let's take July off, at least, from the intense political pounding.
The party conventions and Labor Day will be here soon enough.
Mr. Conrad, how you could not (or is it that you didn't want to) figure the media's influence in Mr. Obama getting the nomination is beyond me. Are newspaper editors, journalists and staffers that blind, naieve or just plain stubborn that they do not (or cannot) see the bias that has influenced this election? For me to feel sorry for even Hillary speaks volumes! Mr. Obama, with his serious ties to (and those he sought endorsements from) ...Rezko, Ayers, Wright and others who would have plaqued and downed any other candidate had the press not tried so desperately to protect Mr. Obama and ELECT Mr. Obama. Add to that all the flipflops on important issues (ex. speaking w/ Iran's dictator w/o pre conditions), all the errors in his public speaking (an Internet search will list them) and comments on fiscal matters that made no sense, it just goes to show that when the press not only protects you, but campaigns for you, you are a sure bet for the nomination. This race was decided the day Mr. Obama announced his candidacy and the headlines across the U.S. were jovial, upbeat and a sign that Mr. Obama's biggest endorsors were people of the all-important media. Compare his entry to that of Fred Thompson's, who received almost no praise (or smiles from) TV anchors and newspaper editors; rather, his late entry was the title of almost every article and how it would effect him negatively took up the remainder of the articles. Then there's the people of this country who don't like the way the economy is headed and who hate taxation (as you can see from readers in Maine), yet they bought the "hype" and refuse to see Mr. Obama for the man he is...a woefully inexperienced man (especially in fiscal matters) who has jumped on board the democrat proposal of 9 TRILLION in additional spending after November. How could Mr. Obama not win the nomination with the idealistic college kids taught by political professors, the far left socialists including Hollywood, the blacks of this country who are in lock-step with the democratic party and the ever-loving biased media not supporting him regardless of all his inequities? Mr. Conrad, might I suggest that you were blindsided by your own refusal to see the bias that has brought the U.S. media much distain across this country, along w/ a reputation for yellow journalism? The bumper sticker on my van will stay on for as long as the glue adheres to the surface; it reads, "The U.S. Media... BIASED & DETERMINED to elect our next president. ETHICS have left the profession." As someone who was a journalism major, someone who actually wrote articles for the KJ as a high school senior and someone who has been on both sides of the political aisle long enough to easily see (and detest) media bias, might I suggest that Mr. Obama getting the nomination over Hillary is simply shocking because had he been anyone else, fair coverage of his campaign would have sunk him months ago? I believe that honest media editors KNOW, deep down in their hearts, WHY Mr. Obama got the nod over Hillary, but (sadly) their own egos keep them from acknowledging the truth....
