Pellet stoves, animal cruelty and Maine's outdoors

Some of our bigger "enterprise" efforts -- major stories, projects or series -- coming up in the next few weeks will be about alternative energy, animal cruelty and Maine's beautiful outdoors.

On Sunday, June 22, we will examine the boom in pellet stoves and other forms of alternative heating, as Mainers react to soaring oil and gas prices.

Longer-term, we are working on an investigative project about animal cruelty and a series about sites preserved by the Kennebec Land Trust, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

We strive to provide you with the breaking local and sports news of the day but also probe more deeply into trends and events that affect our area and your lives.

Let me know how you think we're doing.

We all desperately need more info on alternative heating--geothermal, pellet stoves--will there be enough pellets, what are the best wood stoves today, how do these and wind and solar and others compete price wise with today's oil prices, and where are the vendors who can keep up with demand. Thanks for focusing on these things.

Why not add Nuclear Power to your mix of alternatives. Then all that oil would be available for heating & further breakdown into gasoline.
