Wal-Mart vs. Target vs. KMart

Different kind of topic today.

I was at the KMart on Western Avenue in Augusta last week and, to me, the place looked very different. It was full of merchandise, there was a nursery in the parking lot.

It just looked more vibrant, and I couldn't help but wonder if the new Target up the street may have something to do with that.

So, I thought I'd write about "big box" stores now that all three -- Wal-Mart, Target and KMart -- are in Augusta.

Which do you prefer? Why is that? Is there a discernible price difference? Or is it something that depends on which store is running a sale at the time?

All three of these stores put their sales inserts into our newspapers, as you may know.

In the Waterville area, I have not been to K-Mart since 2003. The last time I was there, there was not a clerk in sight to help me, and even after a call for one from the customer service desk and waiting 20 minutes nothing happened. Just before walking out empty handed, I told the gal on the desk, "Can you see why Wal-Mart's parking lot is full and yours is empty?"

Similar story down here in Kentucky. Wal-Mart is full, K-Mart is not. How much longer it will survive I don't know.

Target? We don't have one yet. So it's Wal-Mart for me. Love it or not.

I love Target, it is very convenient for me and crossing town for Wal Mart is just not worth it. KMart is also very convenient and does have things I use for my home and family. I have noticed a cleaner, brighter store and more attentive staff as well.

Choosing among these stores, one is faced with deciding on a lesser of three evils. Among them, I choose Target.

Wal-Mart is a maligned enterprise that is doing more harm than good to the country. If you shop there, I urge you to do some research on their anti-labor/worker's rights efforts, anti-competetive actions domestically and internationally, and illegal practices concerning employee donations to their political action committee (PAC), which is now the second-biggest spender in PAC lobbying efforts.

I bought a Black and Decker coffee maker at Walmart that broke in 3 days. Exchanged it for another one,an identical B&D coffee maker. That broke in 30 days,i just threw it out.

A week later I found the same Black and Decker coffee maker at Target SAME MODEL NUMBER. It should have been an identical BD coffee maker because it had the same model number but it was slightly different. The piece connecting the coffee filter basket was made of metal, the Walmart one was plastic. Re-iterating the BD coffee Makers had the same model number, there should not have been a single difference.

I bought the Target BD coffee maker priced $1 more than Walmart 3 years later i am still using the coffee maker.

Wal-Mart is ok, but lately their prices don't seem that fabulous, in Waterville anyway. We need a Target to give Wal-Mart competition; otherwise they are cornering the market. Kmart is a joke, I placed an online order June 21 for a bed set, and shipping was going to be in 19-21 days. On the 21st day no shipment, after numerous calls to track order nothing. I ordered the same set from Target for 10.00 more and will get it in 3-5 days. Definitely worth the money considering how long I have been waiting. I will return set to Kmart store when it finally arrives. On a positive note, Target offered me free shipping because I chose to order from them to compensate for Kmart’s downfall (they don’t care about their customer’s satisfaction).

It's between Wal Mart and Target down here around Portland, Me. No longer any K-Marts. Target has the best kept store and a great variety. Wal Mart is building one of their "super" stores in Scarboro so maybe that will be an improvement over the crowded, messy one that is here now. Also, will add some competition in groceries between Shaw's and Hannaford, I hope.

I think Wal-Mart has the best prices, but K-Mart is the most convenient because of its central location in the city. You burn extra fuel trying to save a dollar traveling to either Target or Wal-Mart. K-Mart has been a supporter of Augusta for many years, and because of its manageable size, it's easier for the elderly to handle. I hate it when I go to Wal-Mart and something I want is on the other end of the store.

I think all three have their positives and negatives, but I hope more people will give K-Mart a chance. Remember who was here first!

I've not been to a Target yet because it's a bit of a longer drive. Wal-Mart's prices and service are better than K-Mart's, though I hate the chaos at Wal-Mart. K-Mart just does not have the money to compete. They can't hire enough people to efficiently serve, so their stores look shabbier, their set-ups are not as good, etc. Also, the clerks are not helpful at all- it's like they go out of their way to avoid you. (That is something that money shouldn't make a difference with, of course.)
It didn't used to be that way-- before Wal-Mart took over, K-Mart was actually pretty good. I worked there in my youth and there was a great bunch of people who worked there, the store looked great, etc. (I've worked at Wal-Mart, too- K-Mart was better behind the scenes, actually.) If K-Mart were running the way it used to, I would prefer it to Wal-Mart, even with the difference in prices.

I live near Augusta. I choose to shop at Kmart and Target. Walmart does seem to have the best prices. That being said, I HATE that store and choose not to give them any of my money. They treat their employees like dirt and violate labor laws regularly. Their policy is that they would rather pay the labor violation fines than pay their employees. I hate to support any business with that kind of backwards attitude. I am SO glad that Target is finally here. I miss the Ames department store. That store must have treated their employees well because they had the same employees for years...not the almost daily staff turnover that Walmart has. The staff knew me when I walked in the store. That to me is worth paying a little more.

You're not from around here, are you? Kmart has had a nursery outside every year for as far back as I can recall as well as being fully stocked with merchandise. Each store has some items cheaper then the other and it is maddening to remember where you saw it cheapest. This is also the case with regards to Shaws and Hannaford.

Where I live we either shop a Wal-Mart or in our downtown are, I do both. We have no K-Mart or Target unless we want to drive 125 miles, so in my opinion some of you should be thankful you have a choice. By the way I work part-time at Wal-Mart and have no complaints about how I have been treated in the 1 1/2 years I've worked there. I get a kick out of websites like walmartwatch.com that are constantly cutting down wal-mart on things like insurance and benefits participation does it ever occur to you that people have these benefits for other sources, like spouses companies and if it doesn't make a diffrence on cost maybe if they have had the other benefits for a while and it doesn't make sense to switch. Just thought I'd have my say.

K-Mart is the way to go. The prices are comparable to Wal Mart and the stores are not as maddening. K-Mart all the way!
