Miley Cyrus and me
My daughters, 9 and 7, are huge Hannah Montana fans. While my wife and I limit their TV time, they watch Miley Cyrus' show ("Hannah Montana") whenever they can. If they see the same show 10 times, they seem fine with that.
It shows how old I am, but I remember being the same way about Gilligans Island. And Johnny Quest. And the Partridge Family. And...
An editor at the Kennebec Journal yesterday suggested that the story about Cyrus' Vanity Fair photo shoot — she's 15, and some VF photos showed a lot of skin and were provocative — should go on page A1.

At a meeting for the hearing-impaired
One of the neat things about my job is that I get to meet new and interesting people, go to events and meetings of all sorts. I do this as much as my time permits.
Being a journalist -- reporter, photographer or editor -- is fun this way. People kind of expect us to pop in on their events from time to time. Often, though not always, they are pleased when we do.

A new city editor in Waterville
Meet George Myers Jr., city editor at the Morning Sentinel in Waterville.

Are gas prices changing your life?
Are you driving a smaller car or truck?
Are you braking easier and accelerating more slowly?
Are you carpooling?
Are you cutting back in other areas -- food, travel, clothes -- because it takes $55 to fill up the tank?

Our Augusta series: What do you think?
As you may have seen, we're well into a three-part Sunday series comparing Augusta as a capital city to Concord, N.H. and Montpelier, Vt. We spent considerable time and money reporting this series late last year and early this year.
Personally, I'm really proud of the work that reporter Keith Edwards, photographer Joe Phelan, City Editor Tarcy Hineline and designer Sharon Wood have done with this. I'm also proud to work for a company that supports this kind of journalism and the travel and other expenses that go along with it.

Do you trust newspaper Web sites?
The Associated Press Managing Editors, a national newspaper trade organization, released a report this week showing that readers and editors both trust what they read at newspaper Web sites.
But, interestingly, the APME poll found that readers generally are less troubled by anonymous reader comments at the end of our Web site articles. Editors are more concerned.

Red Sox, Tigers scuffle
Who would have thought this?
Going into Tuesday's game, the Boston Red Sox are in last place with a 3-4 record and the Detroit Tigers are way in last of their division, at 0-6. Both teams are darlings to win the American League Pennant.
That's why you have to love baseball's return. It gives us one more thing to talk and read about.

An expert debates news Web sites
Ernesto Burden, of The Telegraph in Nashua, N.H., was a guest speaker at the Maine Press Association spring conference today. Ernesto is widely considered to be a top Web expert in New England; he is the current president of the New England Associated Press News Executives Association.
He said a lot of things about newspaper Web sites that I thought I'd share. His job is different from mine. He is equally responsible for ad revenue and news content. As the editor, I am responsible for news content — in the papers, and online. Our Web manager (Ben Sturtevant) and Advertising Director (Cindy Stevens) are responsible for ad results.
