Iraq death toll hits 4,000

I want to point out some good work by our copy editors Sunday night, regarding the Iraq War and U.S. deaths.

We print the Morning Sentinel first, and its deadlines basically are 11:15 p.m. for the "Up Country" (Franklin and Somerset counties) edition and midnight for the second edition. The Kennebec Journal is printed last, with a deadline of 1:15 a.m.

Friday night's crash and the 'attitude indicator'

Journalism is the kind of profession where you have to respond to surprises at any time on any day. That's what happened Friday night, as we were wrapping up our weekend newspapers and planning.

The scanners started crackling in the Kennebec Journal newsroom that an airplane apparently crashed in West Gardiner around 6 p.m.
