Gunstock Mountain is right for families
Most likely the name Gunstock doesn't ring a bell with most Mainers. Most will think of the term that is attached to a barrel of a gun.
Well, you're partially right, but the "Gunstock" I'm referring to is a wonderful family ski area located in the town of Guilford, in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, just about two hours west from Portland.
As the historical account goes, Gunstock received its name from a bear hunter who shot the bruin, wounding it, and then finishing it off by striking it with the gunstock of his gun.
Gunstock is 70 years young this year. They have spent over $1 million in upgrades to the family ski resort.
On my recent visit, I noticed many busloads of young students heading out on the slopes to get in some night skiing, riding and tubing. "Over 900 kids came to the mountain this evening," said Bill Quigley, resort marketing and sales director. "We get kids from all over the region and even from the Boston area."
Skiing and riding under the lights.
After the sun goes down, Gunstock remains alive once the lights go on. That's when the kids turn out to take turns on 21 well lit trails, riding five lifts and catching some air on Blundersmoke Park. Night skiing and riding goes from 4 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday; and from 4 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
A mountain for all
Here's the skinny on what Gunstock has to offer: Vertical drop 1,400 feet; Total ski acreage 220 (trails and glades); Snowmaking covers 80 percent; Number of trails 51 (12 percent novice, 61 percent intermediate, 27 percent expert; Longest run 1.5 miles; Lifts seven # one high-speed quad, one quad, two triples, one double, one conveyor and one handle tow; Night skiing, 21 trails, five lifts; Snowboarding all trails, freestyle terrain park and wall.
Tubing Park is great fun
Take a ride on the Thrill Hill Tubing Park. It's the longest tubing run in New Hampshire, covering 825 feet on four chutes on a 15 percent pitch, and is serviced by a surface lift hand tow. Celebrate a birthday party for the kids. It will be a hoot!
