Flood of '87 | Readers remember
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel

Recalling other floods There was flooding to China, Maine in 1970 that happened again in '83. It flooded one time in the spring and the other in the fall. Both times the flooding had put the water level over the causeway at the North end of the lake. I recently searched the MEMA files for China Lake for other reasons and found a photograph dated April, '83 depicting water overtopping the China Lake Outlet Dam with sandbags piled along the top making the dam higher. I also have photos of homes at China Lake in the spring of '83 completely surrounded by water. This did not happen in '87 to nearly the same degree.

The point I wish to make is different soils and conditions cause different flooding conditions at different locations. A given amount of rain that floods the Kennebec River for instance doesn't necessarily flood the China Lake watershed and vice versa. If a flood happens once it can happen again and sometimes to an even worse degree from what appear to be less hazardous conditions.
