Flood of '87 | Readers remember
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel

Relatives tell of the flood We were in the Philippines, adopting our oldest son, when the flood of '87 occurred. When we left Maine in late March, it was a winter wonderland. While in the Philippines, we talked to family members who tried to describe what was happening as the waters rose, but it sounded unreal to us. They saved copies of the Sentinel for us to look at when we came back, but it was still difficult for us to imagine what it was like to actually experience the flood.

These relatives stayed at our house in Sidney during the flood, since they lived on Bay Street in Winslow at the time and feared what might happen if they stayed there. When we returned to Sidney, all the snow was gone, and it seemed like we must certainly have been gone for more than 10 days.
