Flood of '87 | Readers remember
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel

Gazetteer suddenly comes in handy At that time, I was living at Hebron Academy (where my wife worked) and commuting with another person to Unum Insurance in Portland each day. Our driving route changed on a daily basis. Luckily, someone had given me a DeLorme Gazetteer a few months before. I had not had the need to use it much before then. During the flood we used it on every trip to work for over a week.

We found the roads blocked by water several times and were detoured so much that we were not always sure about which town we were in. But, we always made it into work and home each day. Frequently, by using a different route in each direction because of the ever changing flood water. I've had a Gazetteer in my car ever since.

The most amazing sight was found driving by a dam in Hiram ME. Water was shooting through a maintenance catwalk that was easily four feet above the top of the dam's spillway. Plumes of water carried for hundreds of feet as if they came from fire hoses. I have never seen anything quite like it. It certainly demonstrated the incredible power behind the floodwater.
