Eating pizza, seeing ahouse go by
The flood was unbelievable. That was the year I graduated from high school. I lived in the neighborhood off the Augusta Road just past Whipper's Pizza. A friend and I walked down to Whipper's and bought a pizza, sat inside and watched a house float down the river. We couldn't believe it, we were looking out the window with our chins dropped to the floor.
We took quite a few walks during the flood, sometimes down the Augusta Road side and when the water got too high we took the Cushman Road to the Mini-mall and watched the river rise.
Ken's Restaurant was covered. Bill's Tire was covered. I have no idea how Bea's snack-bar is still there. I think that McDonald's was just being built, or it was supposed to be built and I remember that going under water as well as the IGA (and I think LaVerdiere's was there at the time also, not sure).
A friend of mine and her family owned a home on Lithgow Street. I don't remember if the house was washed away or if it was so damaged that they tore it down, but it was another casualty of the flood along with many other homes on that street. Their losses were immeasurable.
The water rose to the corner of the Augusta Road and Gail Street, which is where we turned in to go to our neighborhood. I was hoping it wouldn't make it up much further.
I remember being detoured in Winslow out through the Garland Road into Benton just to get to Waterville to work. At the lowest part of the Garland Road near the river, I remember thinking - please car, don't break down in the middle of this "puddle" I have to drive through now!
My aunt lives on the other side of the river off Water Street in Waterville. I remember the Hathaway parking lot completely submerged and water in the road. I think it even reached KFC, but I can't be certain. I just remember the water and the debris it left everywhere.
