UNITY The Unity Foundation has given Unity College a $96,000 challenge grant to establish the Bert and Coral Clifford Founders Scholarship Endowment. The grant, payable over a 10-year period, is to honor Bert Clifford as a founding director of the college and to recognize in perpetuity Bert and Coral Clifford's many contributions to the success of Unity College.
The Unity Foundation is pleased to award a Challenge Grant that simultaneously honors the contributions of Bert and Coral Clifford and financially enables students to engage in the mission of Unity College as America's Environmental College, said Dott Freeman, president of the Unity Foundation. Unity College president David Glenn-Lewin said in a press release, "This scholarship recognizes Bert's and Coral's interest in education and community. The Cliffords' efforts over decades to found, nurture and support Unity College and its students are remarkable evidence of faith in both the town of Unity, and generations yet to come. There is no finer recognition in perpetuity of one's contribution than financial support for the next generation. We are very happy to be working with the Unity Foundation to make this a reality." Over the years, the Bert and Coral Clifford Founders Scholarship Endowment will reach $200,000, the earnings on which will provide scholarships to students with high need. As the endowment grows over 10 years, an additional $78,000 in scholarships will be provided. The first scholarships will be given in the fall of 2003. To contribute to the scholarship endowment, or for more information, contact Fran Day,director of institutional advancement at Unity College, at 948-3131. The Unity Foundation's philanthropic goal is to contribute to organizations whose missions center on improving the educational, cultural, civic, community, and economic life of Maine, New England, and the U.S.
