HALLOWELL— Kenneth Spalding of Wayne is joining the staff of the grassroots conservation organization RESTORE: The North Woods.

Jym St. Pierre, Maine Director of RESTORE, announced Friday that Spalding will be Maine Woods Project Coordinator.

"I am delighted that Ken is becoming part of our team. He has been involved with conservation issues in Maine for nearly 30 years," St. Pierre said in a prepared release.

RESTORE has been a leader on a number of environmental issues in Maine during the past decade. In 1992, the group launched a successful drive to designate the Atlantic salmon as a nationally endangered species.

It also initiated a public educational campaign in support of the recovery of wolves to the forests of the Northeast where they were driven out a century ago.

Spalding has been director of the Maine Conservation Corps for the past 16 years. In that capacity he has overseen hundreds of projects on public and nonprofit conservation lands throughout Maine. Prior to that, he held several positions in the Maine Department of Conservation, the release said.

During the 1970s, Spalding helped manage a successful citizen campaign to establish the Bigelow Preserve near Flagstaff Lake.

A 1973 graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, he has done volunteer service with many conservation groups in Maine. He will be working with citizens, businesses, and environmental organizations to build support for the proposed Maine Woods National Park & Preserve.
