A look at the week ahead

The traditional Eastern A powers haven't started playing each other yet (aside from the Cony-Skowhegan Sept. 8) but there are still some interesting matchups this week. Here's a look at a few of them:

TUESDAY

Oxford Hills at Gardiner: Oxford Hills was a surprising No. 2 in the final Eastern A Heal points last year, and proved it belonged there by advancing to the regional final, where goalie Alexsys Pike stood on her head and nearly beat Skowhegan by herself. Pike and Tiera Durgin are back, and the Vikings are 3-0-1 despite losing a lot to graduation. This will be their first real test, on the road on a tough field against a Gardiner team that is also undefeated.

Winslow at Mt. View: It's tough to know what to make of Mt. View, which has been up and down. Actually, it's tough to know what to make of anyone in the KVAC Class B. There are 12 teams in the league, and nine of them had at least two wins by Thursday. The others are MCI, Erskine and Lincoln, the three wins in Winslow's 3-1 record. So this will be a good test for the Black Raiders.

THURSDAY

Lawrence at Messalonskee: Lawrence has been building for years to crack into the upper tier of teams in Eastern A. Messalonskee, traditionally a top four team, lost road games against Edward Little and Oxford Hills, but is always tough at home. A win here would be a big boost for either team.

FRIDAY

Winslow at Nokomis: This game was rescheduled from last Tuesday, and it took several attempts to find a day when there were available referees. Nokomis is 4-2 heading into the week, while Winslow is 3-1. These appear to be fairly evenly-matched teams who can both score.

SATURDAY

Maranacook at Belfast: Aside from the first half of a 2-1 loss to Mt. View on opening day, Maranacook has looked very much like the best team in the KVAC B. The Black Bears opened some eyes with a 3-0 win over a strong Camden Hills team this past week, and are 5-1 heading into this week. Belfast has won the last two state titles, but has definitely dropped off this fall. Still, a win over Belfast would be the biggest one in several years for Maranacook.

Oxford Hills at Mt. Blue: The Cougars are probably still riding a high from their upset win over Skowhegan. They will face what could easily be a road-weary Oxford Hills team: The Vikings are at Gardiner on Tuesday, at Cony on Thursday and at Mt. Blue on Saturday morning.
