Winthrop wants to avoid let down

Fresh off a big 26-20 win over Jay High School, Winthrop (3-0) is looking to the past to avoid a let down against 0-3 Madison this weekend.

Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton has reminded his players of the Ramblers' 21-6 loss to Madison in 2005. The Ramblers entered that game with a 5-1 record and were on the verge of clinching a playoff berth. Madison, meanwhile, was 2-4 and playing with just 16 players on its roster. The loss knocked the Ramblers out of playoff conention.
A few of this season's Winthrop players were on that 2005 team.
"We still have the story you wrote from that game we lost two years ago," Stoneton told me Monday night. "That's a reminder not to look past people."
Winthrop host Madison at 7 p.m. Friday.
