Hall-Dale field taking shape
A new multi-purpose field at Hall-Dale High School is nearing completion and should be ready for use next spring. Teams are already putting in requests for its use as both a practice and game field, according to athletic director Tim Johnson.
The new field, located above and adjacent to the baseball field, has been seeded and is growing in nicely. It's 117x89 feet and was built with money from the Simmons fund, named for alumnus Melvin Simmons.
"Ultimately I'd like to see it become a field hockey or soccer game field," Johnson said. "The reason we built it was the soccer teams didn't have enough practice space. We have four teams and one field."
Before it can become a game field, Johnson said an access road will have to be built. Eventually, he'd like to use the current soccer field (once the football field) as a practice field. The new field is flatter and drains much better because it was built over four inches of sand.
It will also be used in the spring as a practice field for baseball and softball. The middle school has its own fields, but uses high school fields for baseball and softball and this will also ease some of the practice burden.
Interest from the Simmons fund totals in the neighborhood of $50,000 a year and is used for various athletic needs. The principal of $1.3 million cannot be touched
