Lawrence keeps on rolling
The Lawrence High School football extended its winning streak to 15 games against a tired opponent. The Bulldogs cruised to a 48-0 win over Brunswick High School on Saturday, just five days after the Dragons beat Edward Little 36-26.
Brunswick game with Edward Little was postponed until Monday because of a bomb scare at the school.
"We tried to go down there with a purpose in mind and that was to be very business like," Lawrence coach John Hersom said. "It had to be a difficult week for them, preparing for two teams. They were coming off a win Monday, so we figured that would be incentive for us to take this game seriously. The kids really answered the call."
The shutout was the first of the season for a defense that Hersom said is improving weekly. Saturday, he credited defensive ends Nic Lee and Isaiah Underwood for helping the Bulldogs contain the Dragons rollout and waggle (QB rollout to pass) plays.
"We have other guys who are consistenly playing well as well," Hersom said. "Shawn (Champagne) is starting to get a pretty good feel at linebacker and the secondary played pretty well."
Champagne is adjusting to his new role as a linebacker for the Bulldogs. He started at defensive end in Lawrence's run to the Class A state title last fall.
