Top 10 in the state for this week

Note: This field hockey list is solely the work of me (Matt, the person in the photo). This will be a regular feature each Wednesday until the playoffs start in mid-October.

1. Sanford
2. Gardiner
3. Skowhegan
4. Gorham
5. Mt. Blue
6. Cony
7. Scarborough
8. Maranacook
9. Deering
10. Biddeford

Just missing the top 10 (in alphabetical order): Camden Hills, Messalonskee, Mt. View, Telstar, Waterville and Wells.

A few notes:

First, the toughest thing was trying to figure out where to put Skowhegan, Mt. Blue and Cony. In that group, they're all 1-1 against each other. I went with Skowhegan because even though they've lost to Mt. Blue, the Indians are still 40-1 in their last 41 games, and you have to respect that.

Cony has beaten Mt. Blue, so it might look odd to have Mt. Blue just ahead of Cony, but Mt. Blue has played exceptionally well since losing to the Rams on opening day. There's not much difference between them, but the Cougars get the nod because of their win on the road at Skowhegan.

Some of you may have noticed that the list includes nine Class A teams, one Class B team and zero Class C teams. I'm erring on the side of caution with that. One thing I'm hoping to touch on in the notebooks for Thursday's papers is that both Eastern B and Western B are wide open.

The best example of that is the game between Wells and Gray-New Gloucester. Entering the week, Wells was 6-1 and second in the Western B Heal points behind Maranacook. Wells' only loss was 3-0 to Gray-New Gloucester. Not only was that G-NG's only win, it was the only time G-NG scored in the first five games! So until the divisions settle themselves a little more, I have to hold off on putting more of those teams in the top 10. The exception is Maranacook, which has won eight straight, three of those over teams which had one or two losses entering the week.
