Little guys come up big
The beauty of the game of soccer is just about anyone of any size can play. This is especially true of smaller players who would be hard pressed to find a spot on a football team. In Tuesday's game between Maine Central Institute and Maranacook in Readfield, two little guys who stood out were MCI senior Ben Badeen and Maranacook sophomore Keegan Ballard.
Just five feet tall, Badeen was everywhere on the field, creating scoring opportunities and getting headers against taller players.
"He's a little guy but I wish I had 20 of him with his spunk and his drive," MCI coach Scott Varney said. "He's a great kid, a hard worker. He makes some things happen out there. He's a good distributor."
Ballard, about 5-foot-2 and 115 pounds, didn't get his chance until late in the game, but made the most of it with his team's second and final goal.
"He's fun to watch," Maranacook coach Don Beckwith said. "What he lacks in height he makes up for in heart. He knows the game and he's always in position to make a play."
