Let's see more showcases for field hockey
Maybe Thursday night's field hockey game between Belfast and Mt. View seemed so special because it was so rare. I'm not suggesting we over-saturate ourselves on night games, but this atmosphere could and should be re-created at other schools.
Of course, night field hockey games usually mean playing on football fields, because those have lights. The optimum grass length is different for football and field hockey, so this does affect the game negatively.
But Mt. View had a great idea: The school rented portable lights for the week, and had soccer and field hockey games under the lights.
The atmosphere was exciting. When Mollie Arute scored the game-tying goal midway through the second half, Belfast called timeout and some of the Mt. View players were actually jumping up and down in the huddle with their coach. Both schools brought a lot of fans, which only added to the excitement.
It was nice to see field hockey -- an entertaining sport if people give it a chance -- get that kind of showcase. Let's hope other schools give their players a chance to compete in that kind of setting.
