Remembering the catch
It''s hard to watch a Winthrop/Boothbay football game, especially in Boothbay, and not remember The Catch.
The Catch occurred in 2000 and capped a dramatic 26-21 Winthrop playoff win over Boothbay in which the Ramblers scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes. The Catch went from quarterback Lee St. Hilaire to receiver Ian Mortimer on the game's final play, a 28-yard fade to the left back corner of the end zone. That was Winthrop's last win over Boothbay until Saturday's 33-14 victory.
With 19 seconds left in the half on Saturday, Winthrop QB Jordan Conant hit Andrew Smithgall on a similar play in the left corner, evoking a few deja vu comments from Boothbay fans.
Most of the players on both teams don't know a lot about the Winthrop-Boothbay rivalry of the mid to late 90s.
"I like to give a little history lesson but most of them don't realize how it all started," Boothbay coach Tim Rice said of the rivalry. "It's kind of tough, but they'll all say 'we remember The Catch.' "
