Competition at Gardiner

Gardiner Area High School has been tested just once this fall, but the Tigers have plenty of competition amongst themselves to keep motivated.

The best example of that is offensive players at Gardiner keeping track of the number of pancake blocks they have in a game. A pancake block is when the offensive players knocks the defensive player on his backside while making a block.
"They are pretty competitive over who knocks the most guys down," Gardiner coach Matt Brown said. "Sometimes when you are playing some of the younger teams, the only way to challenge yourself is to go out there and knock people down to try to get better. We won't have to worry about that next week."
Gardiner, which beat Maranacook 47-0 to improve to 5-0, faces unbeaten Winslow in a rematch of last fall's Pine Tree Conference Class B championship, Saturday in Winslow.
By the way, I didn't keep track of pancake blocks for the Tigers in Saturday's win, but tight ends Mike Denham and Mike Lavallee both laid some pretty mean blocks down field helping Bass Chadwick on his way to a five-touchdown first quarter.
"They usually count up them up after the game," Chadwick said.
Speaking of Chadwick, he had one of the most nonchalant, yet great plays you'll see all year. Waiting for a punt at the 50-yard line in the first quarter, Chadwick didn't have his mouth piece in. After fielding the punt, Chadwick popped in his mouth piece and, instead of running the plan reverse return with Kyle Stilphen, took off down the right sideline and scored.
His teammates could do nothing but laugh on the Gardiner sideline.
