FIELD HOCKEY: A look at the week ahead (Oct. 8-13)

The regular season winds down this week, and there are a couple important matchups on Tuesday, plus the KVAC games on Friday.

TUESDAY

Gardiner at Mt. Blue: Both teams are coming off 1-0 losses on Saturday. Gardiner (12-1) dropped a tough battle with Skowhegan, while Mt. Blue (9-2-2) was stunned by Lawrence. This game is a matchup of Gardiner's offense and Mt. Blue's defense. Win or lose, this will be the best regular-season record in many years for Mt. Blue, and it appears the Cougars will fall no lower than fourth in the Eastern A standings. Gardiner, meanwhile, will be hungry to enter the playoffs on an up note after the loss to Skowhegan.

Waterville at Winslow: This season finale is a rivalry game between the neighboring towns, and there could be something big at stake. It's quite possible that the winner of this game will capture the fourth spot, assuring itself of a home playoff game in the Eastern B tournament. Waterville (8-5) has been playing with everyone, as its five losses are by a total of six goals. Winslow (9-4) was just 3-3 on Sept. 20, but has gone 6-1 since then, including a win over Leavitt. Winslow's lone loss in that stretch was a 1-0 setback against Maranacook when the Black Bears scored with less than 15 minutes to play in the game.

FRIDAY

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship games will both be played at Leavitt Area High School in Turner. The Class A game looks like a rematch of Saturday's contest between Skowhegan and Gardiner. The Class B game will likely pit Maranacook against Camden Hills, and there's a chance those two teams could end up No. 1 in their respective divisions. Skowhegan edged Gardiner 1-0 on Saturday and Maranacook topped Camden 3-0 earlier this season.
