FOOTBALL: Gardiner leftovers
Gardiner High School football coach Matt Brown believes his Tigers can still secure the top spot in the playoffs with a win at Leavitt next week.
"Mathematically, we still believe if we beat Leavitt next week we'll go in the No. 1 team," Brown said following his team's 14-13 loss to Morse on Friday night.
The Tigers, Morse and Winslow are each 6-1 going into the final week of the regular season, but the playoffs are decided by Crabtree points and the Tigers gained a lot of them by beating Winslow last week.
Brown is more concerned with the way his Tigers played Friday night.
"We told our kids only they can go home and look in the mirror tonight and know that they gave their best effort," Brown said. "Morse beat us play for play across the board. We only hope we get a chance to play them again."
The Tigers made some key plays, though. Kyle Stilphen saved a touchdown on the opening kickoff when he tackled speedy back Darrus Grate at the Gardiner 19. And the defense held the Shipbuilders on downs from there. They made another stand in the quarter, this time keeping Morse out of the end zone after they had first and goal on the G-2.
Morse scarcely moved the ball, gaining a net of just 12 yards on the ground. But the Shipbuilders captialized on big plays, none bigger than a fumble recovery at the G-10 late in the third quarter. They also halted three Tiger drives by picking off Stilphen passes.
The Tigers had a final chance at the end of the game after Andrew Kelley recovered a Morse fumble. But with 1:23 left to play they inexplicably tried seven running plays that netted just 28 yards.
