GOLF: State tidbits
Gardiner's Ryan Gay and Gorham's Davd Gushee knew they'd be no playoff after they tied for the Class A individial title Saturday at Natanis. But they held one anyway.
Both shot 74 to tie for the Class A title for the second year in a row. Jeff Sturgis of the Maine Principals Association said there are no plans for playoffs at state golf events because there's no guarantee how many holes it would take, and with four categories to present, time is at a premium. Gay and Gushee held an informal chip-off instead with Gushee chipping in from about 40 feet on his final shot to take the unofficial title. He took the trophy, too, so Gay will have to get his in the mail.
Winslow's Matt Loubier shot 68 at the team championships last week but slumped to an 81 Saturday, good for a tie for 8th place in Class B. Loubier's round was hurt when he took a nine on one hole. Teammate Jeffrey Browne finished in a tie for 5th with an 80.
Schoolgirl winner Kate Merrill of North Yarmouth Academy is one of several "proteges" in the field of former four-time winner Abby Spector of Waterville Spector, now an assistant pro at Val Halla in Cumberland, tutored many of the golfers in Saturday's field in junior clinics and five of them finished among the top 10.
