SOCCER: KVAV game notes
The Maranacook boys soccer team sported a variety of unusual haircuts, true to custom this time of year.
The Mohawks and spiked hairdos didn't hurt the Black Bears as they beat Winslow in penalty kicks for the Class B Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship Monday. Both teams enter this week's playoffs seeded No. 1 in their regions and can only meet again in the state championship.
Falmouth coach Dave Halligan scouted the game. His team has won four of the last seven state titles, including last year's, and may eventually face Maranacook in Readfield.
Winslow coach Ryan Hurley teaches at Maranacook, but said he doesn't have to endure any trash talking from the Black Bears.
"They're all pretty good kids," Hurley said.
The Winslow girls defeated Erskine, also winning in penalty kicks, but may have suffered a key loss when senior forward Meryl McLellan turned her ankle in the first half. She was carried off the field and later examined at a local hospital.
Both teams have a number of weapons, but everything starts at midfield with a pair of superior senior halfbacks, Katie Caron for Winslow and Rachael Siegfriedt for Erskine. Each scored a goal in the penalty kick phase.
