SOCCER: Back to full strength, sort of
Richmond high school played its first game of the Western Maine Class D playoffs and cruised to an 8-2 win over Buckfield. The Bobcats played with forward Amy Russell, something that was in question until right before game time.
Russell sprained her right ankle in the Bobcats final regular season game. She was cleared by her trainer just before the game and despite showing a limp at time, was effective. Russell had a goal in the first half as the Bobcats took a 5-0 lead 20 minutes into the game.
Richmond played two scrimmages in the time between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs, beating Lincoln and Kents Hill, without Russell in the lineup. Coach Troy Kendrick feels that was helpful.
"The good thing was we had a couple of scrimmages and it gave the opportunity for some other kids to step up and it gave the kids a lot of confidence," Kendrick said.
Richmond forward Melanie Schanck, who scored three goals and had two assists, agreed.
"We had to move some people around and give other people opportunities," Schanck said.
