FIELD HOCKEY: Next time, let's keep the kids in mind
Deciding when to postpone games is always a tough decision. There's always a chance that you'll look bad if you postpone and the weather gets better, or you don't postpone and the weather is awful.
That being said, the Maine Principals' Association certainly could have done a better job with regard to Saturday's state field hockey championships.
With the first game scheduled for a 10 a.m. start, Skowhegan had to leave early and a decision should have been made as early as possible. The Indians didn't find out about the postponement until they were on the bus and all the way to Freeport.
Nobody wins in a situation like that. Asking a high school student to get up before 5 a.m. for what turns out to be no reason is as damaging as having that student stay up after 1 a.m. for what turns out to be no reason. Plus, the school loses that money on transportation fees.
There are always tough decisions to be made, but hopefully, these tough decisions can be made earlier in the future.
It would also be helpful if the Maine Principals' Association would post updates on the status of state finals on its Web site. Some fans made the long drive to Portland, only to find that there was no game until next week.
The people who run the tennis singles tournament for the MPA make a point of having a site available where people can check for weather updates. Field hockey (and other sports) would clearly benefit from a similar gesture.
