COLLEGES: UMaine-Farmington teams in conference championships Saturday
UMaine-Farmington will be hosting a pair of North Atlantic Conference championship games on Saturday, and in each case, the opponent is Husson. The NAC field hockey championship will be at noon, followed by the NAC soccer title game at 2. The full day of sports at UMF will be completed with the men's and women's basketball alumni games at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
UMF field hockey has a record of 12-5. Other than a 5-0 loss to Bowdoin in midseason, all of the Beavers' losses have been by one goal. UMF lost 2-1 to Husson in Bangor on Sept. 25.
Kristin Chambers is the obly double-figure goal scorer for UMF, with 12 goals (including six game-winners) on the year. Alyssa St. Pierre and Amanda Fortin have each added seven goals, and a total of 14 players overall have scored at least one goal for the Beavers.
Husson is led by sisters Erica and Elisha Dorso of Farmingdale. The Dorsos have each scored 12 goals and have combined for 20 assists. Erin Nason has eight goals for the Eagles.
Husson has a record of 12-4, but the Eagles are 8-0 at home and 4-4 on the road.
UMF women's soccer is 15-4-1, and has a record of 14-1-1 in its last 16 games. UMF coach Bob Leib, who won his 400th soccer game earlier this season, is retriring after this season.
The Beavers were undefeated in conference play, and knocked off Husson 2-1 at home on Oct. 10. However, UMF did need penalty kicks to squeak by Elms in the semifinals.
Chelsea Norton (12 goals) and Jackie Mrzaik (11) are the leading scorers for UMF. The Beavers have allowed just five goals in 12 games against conference opponents this season.
Unlike its field hockey team, Husson's women's soccer squad is made up almost entirely of players who went to high school outside the central Maine area. Megan LaJoie has a team-high 13 goals for the Eagles, while Megan Clement has nine.
In terms of the home-road differential, Husson soccer is like the field hockey team. The Eagles are 13-6-1 overall, which breaks down to 9-0 at home, 4-5-1 on the road and 0-1 on neutral sites.
