GIRLS SOCCER: Emotional night for Zarrilli
Wednesday was an emotional night for Gorham girls soccer coach Jeanne Zarrilli. Not only did her team win its fourth straight state title, one of her daughters scored the winning goal, another led a strong defensive effort.
It also an emotional night for Coach Zarrilli because she has so many ties to Waterville. She coached the Panthers for six seasons and won a state title in Waterville in 1997. Her daughters grew up playing with many of the current Waterville players.
"My kids grew up with Stephanie (Whitten), Paige (Gardiner), Katie Croswell, there captain," Zarrilli said. "I coached some of them, my kids grew up playing with them, so there was a lot going into this game, a lot of emotion."
Kristi Zarrillli, a sophomore scored the game winning goal for Gorham with 23:55 left in the second half.
"I thought she played really well. She kept her head," Coach Zarrilli said. "For a sophomore she is just kept steadily growing all season."
Katie Zarrilli is the only member of the Rams to play in all four state championships for Gorham.
