FOOTBALL: Lawrence thrives on pressure
Trucks and cars parked just outside the endzone. Fans ringing the field three or four deep. Bleacher full of screaming fans on both sides of the field.
Keyes Field on Friday nights has become the place to be in high school football.
And with good reason. The Lawrence football team, which calls Keyes Field home, has won 21 straight football cames and is the defending Class A champions. They have a defense that swarms to the ball and an offense that is diverse and high-powered.
Expect a packed house again on Friday, when the Bulldogs host the Bangor Rams in the Pine Tree Conference Class A championship game. Last fall, when the two teams meet for a berth in the state championship game, more than 6,000 people showed up.
Lawrence players and coaches started noticing the large crowds during last season's playoff run. Coach John Hersom said he first recognized it when Lawrence played Messalonskee in back-to-back weeks to end the regular season and start the playoffs. Guard Kyle McKeen realized how big the crowds were during the PTC A final last fall.
"Last year against Bangor when Tom Hersom tipped that pass and ran it back, just seeing the reaction to that," McKeen said.
The Bulldogs take pride in defending Keyes Field. They are also aware that teams circle LAWRENCE on their calendars. There is certainly a target on the Bulldogs back.
"It's a challenge every night. We are a target since last year," Lawrence fullback/defensive end Isaiah Underwood said. "Everyone wants to knock off the Bulldogs."
