COLLEGES: Crazy ride ends for Ward, Emerson, Monks
The St. Joseph's College field hockey team won two games in 2005 and six more last season. This year, with local players like Hall-Dale grad Darcy Ward and Erskine grad Kelly Emerson playing key roles, the Monks had a wild postseason.
It started on Wednesday as the No. 5 seeded Monks faced No. 4 Wheaton in the ECAC Quarterfinals. St. Joe's won the game, 3-2, on a sudden-victory penalty stroke shootout. But that result lasted only until the next morning, when the ECAC ruled that the game officials had started the sudden-death round too early.
On Friday, the two teams met at a neutral site (New England College in Henniker, N.H.) and finished the shootout round with St. Joe's winning again.
On Saturday, the Monks played in the ECAC semifinals, and they got to stay at home, defeating Plymouth State, 1-0, on a goal in the second half.
The ride ended on Sunday, when the Monks were back in Massachusetts against No. 2 seed Bridgewater State College. Bridgewater Satte won the ECAC title with a 1-0 victory, stopping a penalty stroke in the first half and scoring the game's only goal with less than 14 minutes left.
St. Joe's finishes the season with a 14-7 record. Ward had six goals and two assists, while Emerson finished with two goals and three assists.
