High school loyalty runs deep

A crowd of more than 200 turned out for Tuesday night's basketball game between the University of Maine at Augusta men and the University of Maine at Machias, most to see former local high school stars perform.

Two or three hundred fans doesn't sound like much, but it's a sizeable turnout for a UMA game. The Moose play at the Augusta Civic Center and feature former players from Nokomis (Tyler Norris), Hall-Dale (Eric Gagne) and Waterville (Dylan Veilleux). Maine fans love high school basketball and their loyalties don't end when their favorite players move on to college.
There were some locals on the Machias roster, too, led by former Maranacook star Charlie Calligan, a senior for the Clippers and their leading scorer. If you haven;t seen Calligan since high school, you'd hardly recognize him. In addition to a prominent tattoo on his arm, Calligan has added several pounds to his 5-foot-11 frame. It hasn't slowed him at all. The silky outside shot is still there and he can take the ball to the hoop with authority. He scored 17 Tuesday in a losing cause. Also playing for the Clippers were Jay Sklllings, the point guard on Hall-Dale's 2005 state championship team, and Kyle Lancaster who started at Richmond last season.
Gagne finished with 14 points and displayed a good outside shooting touch. He showed promise at Hall-Dale and that's coming to fruition for the Moose.
