BOYS BASKETBALL:
With the high school basketball season around the corner, dozens of questions are cropping up and I can hardly wait for the answers.
How will two of the leading candidates for Mr. Basketball — Maranacook's Ryan Martin and Winthrop's Sam Leclerc — fare this season? Too bad they only play each other in preseason. In case you missed it, Winthrop won an exhibition against Maranacook by one point, wth Martin scoring 31 and Leclerc 25.
Where will these seniors decide to go to school next season? They're still weighing offers. And can they lead their teams to state championships?
What about Richmond's Marc Zaharchuk? Is the 6-foot-10 seniuor ready to take over games? With graduation losses to the Bobcats, he'll need to be the man this season.
How will Gardiner play without point guard Kyle Stilphen, who decided to focus on baseball instead of playing basketball this winter? The Tigers dropped to Class B and have a decent returning unit but not much size.
Will Cony live up to its preseason billing as one of the top teams in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference? The Rams return just oe starter in Andrew Pullen, but have a number of experienced players.
Will Hall-Dale surprise? With a new coach in Jim Patrick and a skilled trio of guards, the Bulldogs could. Erskine, which dropped to Class B, is another team that could surprise.
Around the state: Can Bangor repeat? They return three excellent players in Jon McAllian, Lee Suvlu and Ryan Weston, but they lost their leader in Alex Gallant.
And what about Mt. Blue? Coach Jim Bessey gets the best out of his team each year, but he gradauted five starters.
I can't wait for some of these answers.
