INDOOR TRACK: Making do

Track and field athletes, who already have it tough with limited real practice time, are in a real bind this winter.

With renovations taking place in the gymnasium at Colby College, the field house is currently unavailable. Once a week during the season, Colby opens its facility to high school teams for practice and hosts a number of high school meets.
Local coaches hope the facility will be available at some point this season, but for the time being, have had to make do running in hallways, on the track outside or occasionally in the high school gym.
Meet time is limited as well, with construction also taking place at Bowdoin College.
To stay competitive, coaches will go to a number of different lengths. The University of Southern Maine hosts jump meets throughout the year, a number of athletes compete at the Dartmouth Relays, and Waterville coach Ian Wilson even holds mini meets with his team in the hallways of Waterville Senior High School.
