COLLEGES: SMCC atop latest coaches' poll

The Southern Maine Community College is No. 1 in the country in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II men's basketball coaches poll.

The Seawolves received 110 points in the voting, edging out No. 2 Hesser (108) and No. 3 Penn State-New Kensington (104).

UMaine-Augusta fell from fifth last week to ninth. Unity is in 22nd.

SMCC, which has a 13-2 record after defeating Central Maine Community College Thursday night, has three players from Erskine Academy on its team. John Glidden was named the Yankee Small College Conference Player of the Week earlier this month. He is averaging 11.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting 58 percent from the field.

James Liebowitz is shooting 56 percent from the floor and is averaging 8.9 points per game. Eli Madsen has played in four games and is averaging 4.8 points.

The SMCC women are in 11th in their poll while Unity is No. 22.
