ERSKINE BASKETBALL: Missing points
I've made a few scoring mistakes covering basketball throughout my career, but I was pretty sure I had it right Friday night at Erskine Academy.
With the Erskine and Medomak Valley boys coming down the stretch of their KVAC Class B game, Erskine's Derek Peaslee scored a basket to cut Medomak's lead to 49-42. Or so it seemed by looking at the running score in my notebook. But when I looked at the scoreboard it read Medomak 47, Erskine 42.
I double-checked my scoring and couldn't find a mistake. Medomak had scored four baskets and two free throws in the fourth quarter. It didn't seem like that big a deal until Erskine scored the last five points in regulation to tie the game at 47-all and send it to overtime.
Medomak pulled out a 56-53 win following two clutch 3-pointers from Alex Goldrup in the final 20 seconds. After the game, a number of Medomak Valley fans approached the scorer's table to find out what went wrong. Fortunantely, they were headed off by an Erskine teacher. But there had been a change. Two points were taken off the scoreboard when running scores were compared by scorekeeper's from the respective schools. Both agreed the score was 45 instead of 47.
The running score is the official tally and there was certainly no malice intended here. That Goldrup's desperation 3 with two seconds left went in seems fitting since Medomak lost two points somewhere in the fourth quarter. it also averted what could have been an unfortunate confrontation.
