GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lawrence-Messalonskee leftovers
Here are some more things worth mentioning from a very strange night at Messalonskee.
Sometimes you just know it's going to be a strange night at the gym. Before the game, the recording of the National Anthem got stuck about halfway through the song. Then, on the jump ball between Lawrence's Alexa Bernatchez and Messalonskee's Stephanie Haiss, the ball was thrown to high and batted into the arms of Bernatchez. The ball went to Messalonskee on a rarely seen violation.
Lawrence's Jason Pellerin made a nice coaching move near the end of the third quarter with his team up by six. The Bulldogs turned the ball over with four seconds left, and Pellerin holloered for his players to come back and deny the inbounds pass. Lawrence put two players, including Bernatchez, on Messalonskee point guard Ari Perry. The Eagles tried to inbound the ball to another player, but turned the ball over, and Brogan Liberty made a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer for a nine-point Lawrence lead.
Liberty has now scored 23, 24, 20 and 23 points in four games this season. She's only 5-foot-9, but she has excellent body control, which she uses to free herself for layups. She also looks as calm as anyone on the court.
The officiating was, well, not as good as it should be. The officials made enough bad calls that many fans began complaining about even the obvious ones. The officials also let the game out of control. If the game had been closer down the stretch, it might have been an ugly scene.
Bad calls are a part of the game and always will be, but one of the three officials should have stepped forward and taken control of the game.
