BOYS BASKETBALL: Maranacook's Poulin hidden gem
Maranacook's Mike Poulin has often been overshadowed by high-scoring teammates Ryan Martin and Will Bardaglio, but the senior point guard is a key to the Black Bears success.
Long recognized as one of the state's top defensive players, Poulin is coming into his own on offense as well. He remains a pass-first point guard, but is also a good outside shooter. He knocked down four 3-pointers in a Christmas tournament win over Cony and has shown the confidence to shoot and make them when necessary. He's also excellent at taking the ball to the basket and finishing. Kenne State coaches were on hand to watch Poulin in action Friday night against Erskine and saw a typical performance — four steals, three assists, a couple of rebounds, a blocked shot. He scarcely shot as Bardaglio and Martin were hot from the perimeter, but he jump-started the defense and by association, the offense.
Southern Maine and the University of Maine at Farmington are also looking at Poulin, who said he's leaning toward Kenne State or USM. Whoever picks him up will be getting a blue-chip throwback of a point guard who can handle, pass, defend, and score when called upon.
