BOYS BASKETBALL: Pullen comes up big
When Cony High School senior center Andrew Pullen missed a shot early in the overtime period of the Rams game against Lewiston High School on Thursday night, part of the Lewiston crowd chanted, "Overrated."
At least one person involved with the Lewiston program doesn't think that word applies to Pullen, after his 23-point performance in the Rams' 73-71 OT win Thursday.
"He's got my vote so far, of all the guys we've seen, for best player in the league," Lewiston coach Patrick Blais said. "He's a great player. You can't hold guys like Pullen down for too long."
For three quarters, those Lewiston fans probably thought Pullen was overrated. The conference's leading scorer through eight games at 19.9 points a game, Pullen had just four after the third quarter. He took the game over in the fourth and in overtime, scoring 19 of his team-high 23. That total included a 9 for 9 performance from the foul line, including the game-winners with 4.7 seconds left.
This season, Pullen is averaging 92.3 percent from the foul line.
"When you shoot 93 percent you'd better have the darn ball in your hands (late)," Cony coach Bruce Hunt said. "That's just common sense."
