GIRLS BASKETBALL: Cony's quiet leaders

You won't see a lot of emotion on the floor from Rachael Mack and Shelby Pelkey, but they are definitely the leaders on an otherwise inexperienced Cony High School basketball team.

The two are the only seniors on the team and the past three years have been role players, albeit very good ones. This year, the are the leaders on offense, defense and in practice.
"You don't have to be rah, rah all the time to be a good leader," said Mack, who is going to Colby next year. "You have to lead by example through hard work and effort and things like diving on the floor for the ball."
At 6-foot-1, Mack is the team's tallest player and primary rebounder. She's also an excellent shooter and scorer. Cony coach Paul Vachon moved Pelkey from the point to the wing in an effort to generate more scoring and it's paid off. Pelkey made five 3-pointers and scored 17 points in Saturday's win over Edward Little. She also remains the team's best passer and dished out seven assists.
More important, the two communicate with their coach. They went to Vachon recently and told him he needed to be a little tougher on his team whether they were young or not. When do you ever hear this?
Because they play on such an even keel, Mack and Pelkey don't panic and this calming influence spreads to the team. The Rams beat a good Brunswick team on the road last week after falling behind 18-4 in the first quarter.
