HOCKEY: Saturday night fun at Sukee Arena
In the aftermath of Friday night's brawl at a Lawrence High basketball game, security was tight and visible at Saturday night's hockey game between Lawrence and Messalonskee at Sukee Arena in Winslow.
But other than one fan being escorted out, there were no incidents of bad behavior. In fact, this was everything you wanted at a high school sporting event: two evenly matched teams, loud student cheering sections, and a great game. From the game-winning overtime goal by Lawrence freshman Devon Belanger to the outstanding play of Messalonskee senior Matt DelGiudice, this game had a little of everything.
There was great goaltending on both sides, as well as some dramatic goals among the nine scored. It was the first time I'd seen DelGiudice play — I don't cover many hockey games — and I was impressed with his skating, passing and puckhandling. And it seemed as ifhe was always on the ice.
Messalonskee coach Mike Latendresse calls DelGiudice one of the top five players in the state, and with hs college background and eye for talent he should know. These teams play again next Saturday night at Sukee. Shoiuld be another good one.
