GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eastern B predictions

Here's the second installment of my first-round predictions, including an upset I can't believe I'm taking.

EASTERN B

FRIDAY

No. 3 Mattanawcook vs. No. 11 Belfast: This is the third year in a row these teams are matching up, with Belfast winning two years ago in the prelims and the Lynx winning last year in the quarterfinals. Belfast lost a lot from that team, but also added two very good players in Julie Smith and Brittany Dyer. Still, I think Mattanawcook has too much talent, and too many weapons, so the pick is the Lynx.

No. 2 John Bapst vs. No. 7 Mt. View: John Bapst scored an impressive victory over KVAC representative Rockland in the prelims. The Crusaders are 18-1 this season, and they're in their backyard in Bangor. But.....Mt. View defeated that same Rockland team by 31 in early January, and the Mustangs weren't playing as well then as they are now. Maybe I have too much faith in John Donato's tournament experience and coaching expertise (few if any will come up with better game plans), or maybe I'm putting too much stock in the Mustangs winning nine of their last 10 and nearly beating Waterville in that one loss. If this game were in Thorndike, I'd definitely pick the Mustangs. Even in Bangor, I'm wavering, but I'm going with Mt. View in the upset.

SATURDAY

No. 4 Erskine vs. No. 5 Camden Hills: I've gone back and forth on this game. Camden won the regular season meeting by 14, but Erskine was missing three players in that game. Camden has more tournament experience, but Erskine has been playing so well lately, and has won seven in a row. In the end, I have to give a slight edge to Camden for that tournament experience, so I'll pick the Windjammers to pull it out in the final minute.

No. 1 Waterville vs. No. 9 Old Town: After tearing up the KVAC, Waterville gets a shot at a Big East team which has been competitive with everyone it has played all season. If either Morgan Frame or Steph Whitten gets in foul trouble, I think Waterville is vulnerable. But both of those players are smart, and even if they both get in foul trouble, Waterville still has players like Paige Gardiner, Sarah Given and Jen Nale. That depth leads me to pick Waterville.
