Winslow shuts down Gardiner

Amid the hoop hoopla, there stands the Winslow boys hockey team.

The Raiders looked impressive Saturday night in a 4-2 victory over the Tigers. The win secures the No. 1 seed in the Eastern B playoffs for Winslow, which closes the regular season Monday against John Bapst.
The crowd at Sukee Arena was terrific, too. The arena was filled close to capacity, and plenty of students representing both schools came out. The chants were clean, even if the game wasn’t. The teams combined for 16 penalties.
Winslow's Ben Grant is an outstanding player. He makes everyone around him better. He also was involved in a scary moment Saturday as well.
With the Raiders on the power play, he took a wicked line drive off his right ear on an attempted clear in the second period. He skated toward the bench and the game was actually held up for a few minutes as the coaching staff checked him out. He left the ice on his own power, holding his right ear. He returned later in the period with a big bandage covering the top of his ear.
Grant said after the game that the puck hit some type of padding on the ear piece, which then sliced his ear.
Speaking of after the game, Gardiner coach Matt Dineen was livid with his team’s performance. All season he’s been stressing the importance of playing as a team, and Saturday was no exception. He said individualism, again, is permeating the team. It couldn’t come at a worse time for Gardiner.
Despite a 12-5-1 mark and a spot in the playoffs secured, the Tigers seemed to unravel Saturday. They aren’t playing well and time is running out to fix what is wrong.
