GIRLS BASKETBALL: Sportsmanship, and not so much
At Tuesday's Western C girls quarterfinals in Augusta, I was able to see a great display of sportsmanship, and also a case where a young woman was out of line.
First, the good: It came near the end of the Madison-Georges Valley game when Georges Valley center Ashley Geel fouled out. Geel was clearly the best player on the floor in the game, and she played hard throughout, finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocked shots.
When Geel fouled out, the Madison coaches stood up and applauded in a classy and well-deserved gesture for Geel's fine effort.
Earlier, a player on a team thought she was fouled, but was whistled for a violation. This player said, very clearly, "Are you (expletive) kidding me?" If the referees did hear this -- I'm guessing they didn't -- this player was very lucky to escape without a technical foul. I'm all for playing with high intensity, but there's no place for an outburst like that in high school basketball.
