GIRLS BASKETBALL: Western C and D semifinal predictions
There's a full slate of games Thursday in Augusta, and I see them as three good games and one not-so-good one.
WESTERN C
No. 2 Monmouth vs. No. 3 Waynflete: This will match perhaps the top two players in the bracket in Monmouth's Jenn Lola and Waynflete's Margaret Veroneau. Both are about 5-foot-9, can shoot, handle the ball, rebound, pass -- the works. Veroneau has made 51 3-pointers in 20 games, and Lola has won games by herself with hot streaks. They're about a wash if neither gets in foul trouble, but I think Waynflete is a little stronger, so I'm going with the Flyers.
No. 1 Madison vs. No. 12 St. Dominic: Madison had a tough first half in the quarterfinals against Georges Valley, and I think the Bulldogs will have a much easier time against St. Dom's. That's not to slight the Saints, but I believe Madison has played a tougher schedule overall and has more talent. Next year, St. Dom's wins this game, but Thursday, I'm going with Madison's seniors.
WESTERN D
No. 2 Valley vs. No. 3 Vinalhaven: Vinalhaven won the first meeting by seven, and Valley won the rematch by nine. Both teams are playing quite well lately and showed some excellent defense in their quarterfinal wins. Valley starts two freshmen, but you couldn't tell by their poise against Rangeley on Monday. With two evenly-matched teams, I give the edge to Valley here because the Cavaliers fans always come out and support their team. They stomp and cheer when Valley does well, and I think that will be worth a few points to Valley.
No. 1 Buckfield vs. No. 4 Richmond: This doesn't look like much of a game on the surface, with Buckfield winning the regular season meetings by 40 and 23. But that second game was close for a half, and this one could be close for longer than that. I still pick Buckfield -- you have to respect 19-0 and those two wins by a combined 63 points -- but if the game is within a couple points in the final minutes, I think Richmond will pull off the upset.
