Richmond/Valley round three
Here are three things to keep in mind as Valley and Richmond meet for the Western Class D boys basketball title this afternoon at the Augusta Civic Center:
1. Can the post players from either team stay out of foul trouble? If either Richmond's Marc Zaharchuk or Valley's Trevor Miller picks up two quick fouls, it could change the game. Richmond has a little more depth, and could withstand a prolonged Zaharchuk withdrawl better than the Cavaliers could make out without Miller for an extended time, but both are vital to their team's success.
2. Which team has the hot hand from outside? Richmond has plenty of outside shooting options, so if one or two players go cold, others could step up. If Valley's Curtis Miller is hitting 3-pointers early, it would open up more options for the Cavs to get the ball in the post or penetrate.
3. Which team can take care of the ball more? If either team can't limit the number of turnovers, it could lead to easy transition baskets for the opponent. Valley had 23 turnovers the first time these teams played, and lost by more than 20 points. The next time they played, Valley cut the number of turnovers in half to 12, and still lost by 13 points.
It's a tall order, but if the Cavs can cut their turnovers to under 10, and slow the game down a little, they could get the upset win.
