HOCKEY: Random thoughts on tournaments ..
Lewiston and Lawrence are on a collision course to meet in the Eastern A semifinals. Keep an eye on that game as the Blue Devils are still steaming over comments Lawrence coach Yvon Boudreau made regarding the team’s regular season game, which Lewiston won 12-2.
Boudreau said, “They were playing their big line every other shift, even when it was 9-2. On the ice after the game, I told (Lewiston coach Norm Gagne) that we weren't ready for this game but that we'd be back. I said, ‘We'll be back.’ (Gagne) just walked away.”
Although Boudreau mean no disrespect to the Blue Devils, his comment didn’t sit well with Gagne.
Lawrence plays Gray-New Gloucester on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Sukee Arena. Lewiston hosts Messalonskee on Monday at 7 p.m. The winners meet Saturday.
In Western A, Falmouth has by the far toughest draw of any tournament team. In order for the Yachtsmen (13-4-3) to reach the Class A state title game, they will likely have to beat St. Dominick (12-8-0), Kennebunk (17-3-0) and then Biddeford (20-0-0), the top ranked team in Class A. Good luck.
Speaking of tough draws, Waterville coach Dennis Martin can’t be thrilled with his draw, either. The Panthers host Bangor on Tuesday in a quarterfinal game. The Rams (11-9-0) shut out the Panthers 2-0 on Feb. 15. The winner could see Brewer (16-4-0), which split the regular season series with Waterville (12-7-1).
Messalonskee will have to play top seed Lewiston on Monday without the benefit of a practice after it beat Cony on Friday night in a prelim game. Ouch.
The Eastern B semifinals will be played at Sukee Arena in Winslow. Winslow is the top seed in Eastern B and awaits the winner of Presque Isle and Houlton-Hodgdon, who play Monday. The semifinals are supposed to be played on neutral ice. When asked about the advantage, Winslow coach Corey Lessard said the Raiders will be treated like it’s playing on neutral ice, which means they won’t be able to play their own music.
And he was serious.
