This time, MPA made the right move

It may not even snow tomorrow. But even if we don't have to shovel and I can save from paying for my plow guy's summer home, the Maine Principals' Association still made the right move when it postponed the high school basketball and hockey games scheduled for Saturday.

If you haven't heard, the MPA moved the state championship basketball games to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and switched the hockey playoff games to Monday.

The MPA made this decision Friday morning, when there wasn't even a hint of new snowfall on the ground. By doing so, they saved the Central Aroostook boys a long and fruitless trip. The Panthers had made plans to stay in a hotel in Augusta Friday night, but got the call from the MPA in time to cancel their reservations.

This avoided a repeat of the fiasco at the state field hockey championship games, when the Skowhegan team was on its way to Portland and got to Freeport before getting word that the game was postponed.

The MPA apparently learned its lesson from that mistake, so kudos to them.

I agree with rescheduling for sure... but could we have done a better job of rescheduling the hockey semi finals? Our Lawrence team is slotted to play at 9pm tonight in Lewiston. Since it will follow three other games, the chances of it beginning on time are slim. Is the MPA aware that Lawrence begins its day at 7am? - about an hour earlier than most schools! This makes for a very long day for our boys - today and tomorrow. Never mind the depletion in our fan base. We have two sons that play and there is no way out five girls will miss their game... How about if the MPA comes to my house in the morning to get my seven Lawrence students off to school?

I couldn't agree more with MB. I don't think the MPA had the students safety in mind. Lawrence will not get at school before 1:00 am and then they will still have to drive home. Poor planning and poor results. We live in Maine, bad weahter should be part of the original planning. This is a win win situation for lewiston, home ice, no travel. The Colisee is not the only rink the other games could have been held elswhere. No one is saying that the games should have taken place on Saturday but the reschuling should have been handled differently.

I agree with the MPA making this move but disagree on what it will do to our Lawrence kids. It’s a, lose, lose for them. They start there day at school at 7am that means some of these kids get up around 5am, now you want them to play one of the most physical sports in High School at what you may dream will be 9pm Your all NUTS at the MPA. Having talked to Executive Director Richard Durost and got blown off, as he felt there was no problem. Why is the MPA so worried about money that they wish to put our kids in harms way. They have 4 games back to back with only 2 hours to play the games, very few play off games keep with in there two hour time frame so lets be real that our kids will not start much before 10pm, they play there two hours that 12 midnight, take there showers now its 12:30am now they drive back to Fairfield that’s (1hour 10 minutes) 1:40am now they have to drive home say 45 minutes after they unload the bus. 2:20am and now get up at 5am that is 2 ½ hours of sleep for our kids yep MPA really looking after our kids. Oops forgot they didn’t eat did they. How can I make this assessment, after many years as a Hockey Coach and holding a level 5 Master USA Hockey Certificate if it was my team going to play one of the most hard hitting teams in the league and what could be called one of the most discipline teams, it this game didn’t start at 9pm I would load them on the bus there safety is the coaches responsibility and playing a playoff game after 9pm is just wrong.
MPA web site it states in there policy "to provide a level playing field between schools, so that one set of students is not placed at a disadvantage to others whith whom they compete for state championships;" Do you think its fair to our kids?

Play by Play from the Sun Journal Proof that the game will not start on time lucky to be 10pm, MPA looking after our kids, Thank You MPA

3:10 p.m. - 15:00 left in the first period - Game time. Anthems have been sung, players are ready for faceoff. It's game time.

3 p.m. - Game time, but not really. As expected, the first game of the day will get off to a late start as teams were late in getting onto the ice for warmups. Looking at 3:10 for an actual start time.

2:45 p.m. - Fans are starting to trickle in to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee this afternoon as a full day of hockey is set to begin.

Falmouth and Kennebunk get things started at 3 p.m., and will be followed by Brewer and Waterville, Biddeford and Scarborough, and Lewiston and Lawrence.

The final game, featuring Lawrence and Lewiston, is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m., but will be lucky to start by 10.

second overtime and its 5:20pm the second game was going to start at 5pm so again thank you MPA for taking care of our kids right not the last game will not start much before 10pm Thanks MPA

4:42 to play in the 2nd OT - Neither team appears willing to take a chance. Falmouth had a 3-on-1 early, and Kennebunk just missed a 3-on-2 chance, but that's about it.

7:59 to play in the 2nd OT - Back to action at the Colisee...

End of the first OT - The Zamboni is back on the ice as the teams retreat to their locker rooms still knotted at 1-1.

THANK YOU MPA it is now 11:40 and the lawrence vs lewiston game has just ended with a score of 5 to 1 lewiston winning. Lawrence played hard to the end. Kinda have to wonder if the game had been played earlier in the evening what the score would have been. It is tough enough to win a game against lewiston without having circumstances stacked against you. Espeicially avoidable circumstances. Lawrence made history tonight the first time that they have gone this far in the hockey playoffs. The team and coaches should be proud and the MPA should never ever put teams in this situation again. The team will not be home until 1:00 am and oh by the way it is raining and black ice. Hope the fans and the team get home safley.
