BASKETBALL: So long to Maranacook's Big 3
I'll miss watching Maranacook's Ryan Martin, Mike Poulin and Will Bardaglio. They played their last game together Friday night when they beat Cape Elizabeth for their second Class B state championship in three years.
There have been exciting trios at Maranacook over the past decade, beginning with Brian Gerrity, Greg Creek and Justin Olsen in the late '90s, and extending to Charlie Calligan, Matt St.John and Kaleb Violette four years ago. But none clicked quite like Martin, Poulin and Bardaglio.
There's plenty of talent there for sure, but there's also chemistry and these three were identified as special before they even reached high school. Martin, the prolific scorer, was the perfect complement to the unselfish Poulin. And Bardaglio did a little of everything, beginning with his marvelous 3-point shooting.
These three all played defense and thrived in an uptempo setting. But as they proved in the low-scoring victory over Cape Elizabeth, they can do what it takes to win. Down the stretch, all three nailed a key 3-pointer. Coming up with plays in the clutch is one reason they've been so much fun to watch.
Like all good players, they had help of course. Junior Devin Gerrity came into his own in the latter part of the year and the tournament and Conrad Gilman was an indespensible rebounder.
Who are the next big three at Maranacook. Well, 6-foot-6 Ben Johnson had a nice game Friday night and Sam Poulin is ready to step into his older brother's point guard position. Both are sophomores. David Clough is another promising sophomore.
These three or any number of juniors will have to work their tails of to approach what Martin, Poulin and Bardaglio have accomplished. They're exceptional role models.
